Evidence in Mungana Case DEFENDANTS’ STATEMENTS (Rec. August 5, 9.30 p.m.) Brisbane, August 5. In the course of the Mungana action, Mr. A. D. McGill, counsel for the Crown, read answers by the defendants to the Crown’s interrogatories. Goddard admitted that Reid had allotted 1250 shares in Mungana Mines, Limited, to him “in consideration of the friendship, advice, and assistance which Goddard had given him in his mining undertakings.” McCormack admitted that his inteicst in the Mungana mines began in December, 1917. Under a verbal agreement with Reid, McCormack received £10,5’.)6 for his 3476 shares, which sum was paid to the company by the Queensland Government. Mr. McGill also tendered answers by McCormack showing that he paid various substantial sums to Theodore between April, 1922, and July, 1925, the largest of which was £l6OO. Theodore did not give receipts. Theodore, in turn, confirmed the receipt of these sums. The case was adjourned. The defendants in the Mungana action are the Federal Treasurer, E. G. Theodore, the Queensland ex-Premier, Wiliam McCormack, also Peter Louis Goddard and Frederick Reid.
