Grand National “Double Sale” FAT SHEEP FIRMER By Telegraph—Press Association Christchurch, August 5. This week’s market at Addington was the Grand National “double sale,” and it attracted as usual show stock in the fat stock sections. The display In the fat cattle section was slightly better than for some years. The North Island was strongly represented, as was all the South Island, including the West Coast. Store Sheep.—A moderate entry, mostly ewes of mixed appearance. It was n dragging sale and there were many passings. Values were: Good s.m. half and crossbred ewes, 14/- to 16/'.; medium s.m. half and crossbred ewes, 10/- to 12/6; plain s.m. half and crossbred ewes, 6/- to 9/-; good 6 and 8-tootb Corriedale ewes to 16/10. Spring Lambs.—An entry of 61 head of -disappointing quality. The top price was 43/4. Other values ranged down to 12/4. Fat Sheep.—An entry of 5600 head. A keen sale with the demand well maintained. A consignment of 492 sheep from the North Island was yarded. There was a general advance of 1/- a head in all classes. Hastings, August 5. At the weekly sale at Stortford Lodge today there was a reduced yarding of beet cattle. Prices from the start showed a firmer tendency. No extra heavy cattle were yarded, and very few station fat cows were offered. It was the smallest entry for many months. Prices throughout the sale were very even for ox beef. Bullocks and vealers sold freely, prices being in favour of vendors. Prime ox beef realised 23/- to 25/- per 1001 b; unfinished, 21/- to 22/-; medium cow beet realised 17/6 per 1001 b. There was a good demand for all classes of sheep at the Burnside sale to-day, and values for prime lots showed an advance of 1/- to 1/6 a head. The demand for fat cattle was much weaker, and prices declined from 20/- to 25/- a head. There was little demand for store cattle. All classes of pigs met with a brisk sale; porkers and baconers being sold at an advance of 5/a head. Fat Cattle.—The entry of 230 head Included a large sprinkling of plain animals, and a few pens of extra good quality bullocks. Heavy bullocks sold to £l9; medium to £l6/10/-; light, to £ll/10/-; heavy heifers, to £9; medium to £7/10/-; light to £6; heavy cows to £9/10/-; medium to £7/10/-; light to £6/15/-. JOHNSONVILLE SALE Fat Cattle and Ewes Dearer There was a firming in the values of fat cattle and ewes at Johnsonville sale yesterday, when Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd. offered 130 head of cattle and 1546 sheep. An exceptionally short yarding of fat cattle created a keen demand, and rates went up from 2/- to 3/- per 1001 b. Extra choice ox made up to 28/- per 1001 b; choice and prime, 24/- to 27/-; ordinary, 21/- to 23/-; prime young eow and heifer, 24/- to 27/-; ordinary cow beef, 18/- to 23/-. WAIRARAPA VALUES Masterton Sale Dominion Special Service. Mastorton, August 5. A fair yarding of sheep was submitted to a good attendance of buyers by Associated Live Stock Auctioneers, Ltd., at their Masterton sale to-day. A feature of the yarding was a line of 240 prime heavy owes offered on account of Mr. J. Ogilvy, of Gladstone, which realised top price for tills season at 18/-. Following is, the range of prices:—Heavy I fat ewes, 18/-; lighter ewes, 15/-; fat wethers, 13/8 to 17/1; store wethers, 11/-; cull b.f. lambs, 6/-. A yarding of 600 sheep and a few dairy cattle and pigs were offered by the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Distributing Co., Ltd., at their Masterton sale today. Although fats did not reach the maximum prices of last week they all sold at good sound values, according to their quality. Well-forward dairy heifers met with a good demand and sold readily, while the weaner pigs met with an exceptional Inquiry. In spite of very rough weather, Ao>o-' elated Live Stock Auctioneers, Ltd., report that there was a large attendance at a clearing sale they held at Pirinoa yesterday on account of Mr. A. J. Reynolds, of Tuhltarata For the last font years Mr. Reynolds’s herd has averaged over 3001 b butterfat, and no doubt these records attracted many buyers The cows were nil In good order, and the majority were early calvers Individual testing figures were given out as each cow entered the ring. The best cows created keen competition, and quite a number made prices from £9 to £ll/5/r. The latter was top price for the day The herd averaged £7/3/-.
