P. & T. CONFERENCE

Employees’ Association The biennial conference of the New Zealand Post and Telegraph Employees’ Association was opened in Wellington yesterday by the Postmaster-General, lion. J. B. Donald. Mr. G. McNamara, secretary of the department, addressed the conference. The president, Mr. It. H. Brown, gave a survey of the activities of the association during the last two years, and dealt with the problems which had to lie faced during the next two years. It was mentioned that as promotions were slower than in other branches of the Public Service, the salary question was of particular moment in the Post and Telegraph Department. The conference will consider urging the Government to provide for wages and salaries to be assessed on an arbitration basis. Consideration is to be given to the cases of hardship among the lower-paid officers, and to the aggravation of the position by the recent increase in the unemployment taxes,
