WORK AT TRENTHAM

Preparations for National PROMISING TWO-YEAR-OLD Trentham trainers have been considerably handicapped by wet weather in the preparation of horses for immediate engagements, but there was an improvement in track conditions yesterday morning. It lasted, however, only long enough to get the bulk of the work done, a heavy downpour from the south arriving towards the finish of the proceedings. Preinring for the National. Trainers with horses engaged at the Grand National meeting took advantage of the opportunity to get in some fast work on the inside of the trial grass. Tne going was soft and slow. Trentham has a fairly large representation at Riccarton next week, but on the work they have been able to do lately not many of them have prospects that can be regarded as anything out of the ordinary. Ephialtes worked early, running seven furlongs in 1.35. He is not in on the first day at Riccarton, but will probably be sent down for the second or third day. No riding engagement has yet been made.

Lady Pam WelL Lady Pam was only going half pace with Actaeon over four in 55. She will run on the last day at Riccarton. but is probably not forward enough to show her best form, though she has done well during her easy spell. Actaeon did not work with much dash, and he seems to have felt the effect of his race in the Trial Plate last month. False Scent ran a smart half, breaking 53. He will accompany The Sun south. Spear Lad and Vitaphone ran the same time. Vitaphone again went well. Acis worked well against St. Roger over four in 53, and has done all right in view of engagements next week.

For Sydney. ~ , ‘ H. B. Lorigan, with the Sydney trip in view, rent his charges along. Gesture and Oratorian ran four in 54}, and Lavmgton and Concentrate six in 1.25. Lady Noel and Lady Rene got away from Historic at the five furlongs, and under such condition Historic does not do his best. Lady Noel finished a couple of lengths ahead of Lady Rene, Histone four or five lengths back. Lady Noel, who works well, ran the five in 1.9 2-5. They are all booked for Riccarton on Friday night. Historic has done all right in his preparation lately, though S. Reid is rather doubtful about his near hind fetlock. ! Improving.

Valrewa and Arrowzone ran six in 1.23 2-5 from almost a stand. They kept together till the last half furlong, wiien Valrewa drew out smartly to finish a couple of lengths in front. She has not done much racing, and appears to be considerably improved, for’ it was a smart effort. Arrowzone’s performance was quite satisfactory, as he carried a heavy weight. It was not intended to take Valrewa to Riccarton, but as she is showing such improvement she .may now accompany Arrowzone on Friday night. Autopay and The Sun ran seven furlongs in 1.36, the last half in 56. Autopay, who had only a couple of short sprints previously, finished with his mate, who worked well.-and looks improved by his racing at Wellington. Autopay looas a picture... Royal Game in Form. I

Royal Game, Shootist, and Black .Mint ran six furlongs. Black Mint was ridden by a very light boy, and he does not go well usually under such conditions. He tailed off for most of the gallop, but was pulling up well at the finish, Royal Game finishing just, ahead of Shootist, with Black Mint on their tails in 1.25, the last half in 57. Royal Game went well. He has shown some of his best form at Kiccarton at this period of the. year. Bright Song and Matin Chimes ran four In 56 2-5. Bright Song will dp the Geraldine spring meeting under the care of her trainer, J. Kyle.

The Two-year-olds. Trainers with two-year-olds are begint/m' to sharpen them up with short sprint® on “the two-year-old track, which is in better order than the other grass tracks. It is early yet to form any opinions regarding the prospects of the youngsters, but G. Jones has Mr. Kemball’s Posy forward, and she shows plenty of pace, bhe is a bay filly by Chief Ruler from Rosellate, thus sister to Tenderden and , tne unfortunate Richborough.
