HISTORICAL SKETCH

City of Washington An historical sketch of Washington, the United States capital, was given by Mr. W. J. McKeon, A.N.Z.1.A., before the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects last week. He traced the history of the city from its foundation by George Washington, in 1790. and explained how the French engineer, Major Charles Pierre I'Enfant, had designed it after the lines of his beloved Paris. The lecturer made special reference to the intensive planting of trees which had provided such an admirable setting for most of Washington’s buildings, and urged the importance of this desirable feature in all city planning. . ■_ .Some sixty views of the city, including a number of aerial colour . photographs, were shown, the lecturer giving a short historical sketch of all the buildings and monuments.
