TAITA GORGE ROAD

Alternative Route HUTT COUNTY PROPOSAL Members of the Hutt County Council are considering the provision of an alternative route to the road through the Taita Gorge where much trouble has been experienced lately. At the meeting of the council on Friday Councillor W. V. Dyer moved that the Main Highways Board be asked to consider a scheme to continue the Western Hutt Road northwards at Haywards and ultimately to junction with the main east road at Silverstream, the Hutt River to be bridged near the present railway bridge at Silverstream, so that in the event of Taita Gorge highway—the main . access to Wellington—being blocked, traffic could be diverted over the new route via Western Hutt Road. Councillor Dyer said the time was opportune to do this work. They would probably have recurring trouble in Taita Gorge. It would mean about threequarters of a mile of road, and he did not think they would have any trouble about getting the land. The work could be done under No. 5 scheme. Councillor S. Blackley seconded, saying that there was serious danger of the main road being blocked, and the alternative was via Waikanae or 'Moonshine road. It was work on which unemployed could be put instead of scraping grass off the road-side. » The-motion was carried.
