The big fire on Saturdaf night attracted a very great crowd of people. Quite the most fashionable crowd seen at a fire for some time. People rushed from the dance halls in full evening dress to catch a glimpse of the blaze. Women in light, flimsy dresses and fur coats, and delicate satin shoes, kept abreast with their male escorts in the race to get there before the fire brigadesmen got to work. Motor-cars also brought many sightseers, and the crowd was so thick that the inner fringe was frequently pushed within range of the occasional streams of water 'that swept the road as the firemen swung their hoses to new objectives.
