Waiwetu and Shandon HONOURS EVEN
- A strong, cold, north-westerly wind made conditions unpleasant for the match between Waiwetu and the Shandon Golf Olubs, on the Waiwetu links, on Saturday afternoon. Each side won eleven games, though Waiwetu had a runaway victory in the Watt Cup competition by eight games to two, scoring 92 points to Shandon’s ■!}■ The following are the results, the Waiwetu player being mentioned first in each instance: — ' Gilbertson beat Bowring, 2 up. Hogg beat Feist, 6 and S. S. Duncan beat Hunter, 2 up. Mullan beat Clapcutt, 7 and 3. ■ Warnes beat Stuckey, 5 and 4. Davis beat Denz, t and 2. Ryan beat Bowen, 4 and 3. Browne beat Burke, C and 4. Here lost to Johansen, 2 down. Alston beat Jeffery, 4 and 3. Wilson lost to McCarthy, 2 and 1. Firth lost to Bishop, 6 and 5. Burns lost to Barnett, 2 down. Harvey lost to Melvin, 2 and 1. Barker lost to Greager, 3 and 1. McKay beat Poole, 3 and 2. McPhail lost to 8. Rodger. 5 and 4. Lesouef lost to Reid, 4 and 3. Marsden beat Fergie, 5 and 4. Ferris lost to Swan, 1 down Ross beat Runeiman, 4 and 3. Lockhead beat Ward, 3 and 2.
J. J. Gilbertson, who learnt his golf in the Shetland Islands, had to fight hard to defeat M, R. Bowring by 2 up. The Shandon No. 1 was driving a long ball, and was usually on in two, but Gilbertson counteracted this with deft work with his mashie, and deadly putting. Bowring was 1 up at the turn, and they halved the next six holes. The Shandon player had bad luck at the 17th, where his opponent laid him a stymie. He chipped. cleverly over Gilbertson’s ball, and sank his pill, but his ball took the other one in with it. Bowring duffed a couple of shots nt the 18th, which went to Gilbertson in 5 to 6, giving him the match by 2 up. Bowring was all at sea on the greens, while his opponent ran them down in great style from any distance. Bowring, however, sank a 24-footer at the JOth, but Gilbertson ran down a 15footer for a half.
Mr. H. Firth, the captain of the Waiwetu club, in welcoming the Visitors, said that as near neighbours there was always a friendly rivalry between Shandon and Waiwetu, which made for the good of the game., Mr. G. H. A. Swan, captain of the Shandon club, expressed the thanks of his players for the hospitality which had been extended to them. The very friendly contest ended in an exchange of cheers. WOMEN’S MATCH Shandon Defeats Waiwetu A match between the Waiwetu and Shandon ladies’ clubs, on the Shandon links, on Saturday, resulted in a victory for Sl’^’.lon by 7 games to 4, with one game halved. The following are the results, the Shandon player being mentioned first in each instance: — Miss Oughton lost to Mrs. Evlson, 3 and Miss Hay-Mackenzie lost to Miss Robinson, 5 and 3. Miss Pownall won by default from Mrs. Ryan. Miss Levy lost to Mrs. Ridler, 3 and 2. Miss Ellison beat Miss Milne, 8 and 6. Mrs. Burke and Miss Cochrane, all square. , „ Mrs. Low beat Mrs. Clemmens, 3 and 2. Miss Press beat Miss Findlay, 4 and 3. Miss Thompson beat Miss Chitty, 4 and 3. Miss Edwards beat Mrs. Wilson, 3 and 1. Miss Cornish beat Mrs. Hatfield, 3 and 1. , Miss Souter lost to Mrs. McKay, 2 down. CLUB COMPETITIONS Canadian Foursome at Miramar A Canadian foursome, in which senior and junior players were partnered, was played on the Miramar links on Saturday. The winners were H. A. Black, the New Zealand amateur champion, and H. Parkin, who, with a handicap of 6, returned a card showing 1 up. They did the exceptionally good medal net round of 79, which is only four strokes over par, under boisterous weather conditions. The runners-up were H. 11. McLean and H. A. Bown (11), who finished 1 down. Next Saturday the competition for the Doughty Memorial, a fourball unconditional contest, will be played. Hutt Club A bogey competition on the Hutt links on Saturday resulted in a wiu for I. A. Symes, 1 up. A fourball bogey played over the weekend was won by T.. R. McGregor and J. Shelly, with 5 up. The next best scorers were R. W. Hope and J. E. Tuunington, 4 up; R. I. M. Sutherland and I. Macallan, 3 up; 8. London and V. Jervis, 3 up; J. A. Ronald and A. Caselberg, all square. In the final for the Wilford Cup, played over 36 holes, A. M. Cousins and R. L. A. Cresswell defeated L. Buist and C. R. Burgess, 3 and 2. ■ Next Saturday the Hutt club will send a team on tour to play matches against the Rototirwai, Greytown, and Masterton clubs. Mornington Club The qualifying round for the Sievwright 4’up, over 36 holes, on the Mornington links, on Saturday, resulted in the following sixteen qualifying to play off: Selig 135, L. McGirr 138, J. Watkins 139, Buckman 141, Shanks and Strathmore 143, Mace 144, Barton, Hartwell, McKinnon and McWhirter 146, A. Watkins 147, Arter and McElligott 148, Clements and Kelly 149. The first and second rounds will be played next week-end, the draw being as follows: —Selig v. Kelly,. Hartwell v. Barton, Shanks v. A. Watkins, Buckman v. Arter, J. Watkins v. McElligott, Strathmore v. McWhirter, McKinnon v. Mace, McGirr v. Clements. In the final for the captain’s trophy, played over the week-end, McGirr beat McWhirter, 4 and 2. . Hutt Ladies’ Club A Canadian foursome will be played on Wednesday, the following being the draw: — Miss I’. Bunny and Mrs. Jack v. Mrs. Baldwin and Miss Mathews, Mrs. Admore and Miss Jervis v. Shandon Ladies’ Club A one-club competition for Miss Oughton’s trophy was played by the Shandon Indies’ club during the weekend. It was won by Miss Low, with a card showing 77 net. Miss Ellison being one stroke behind.
