Deficiency of £5O/10/-

A bus driver of Lower Hutt. Frederick George Goss, employed by the Railway Department, had his affairs investigated before the Official Assignee in bankruptcy. Mr. 8. Tangier, yesterday. His debts were shown at £l2O. and assets £6O/10/-, the deficiency being £5O/10/-. Bankrupt attributed his failure to the long and continued illness of bls wife, and to a business venture which was not a success. He bad four children, the oldest 11 yearsi His wages were £5 a week before the "cut,” but were now £4/10/-. Replying to the Official Assignee, debtor said his wife was running the business, money being lent her for the purpose. He carried on with the running of the bus. the rent of the shop being paid from bls wages. He had a baby ear before the business was taken, but it bad since been sold as be could not run it. He bad not finished paving for it when it was sold. He paid £[lo down. Ho bought it to give bis wife and children fresh air. The Official Assignee: "I might have illness In mv family, but I haven’t got a Rolls-Royce. If you hadn’t bought the car you might hare been able to pay your creditors with the money.’” Debtor said he was not then in debt. Before taking the business he had sold his house, receiving about £75 out- of it. It wns, then that he bought the car. Tlie debts had been incurred since the opening of the business. The Official Assignee pointed out. that when he bought the ear he was solvent, and how he spent his money then was no concern of anybody's. The debts had been Incurred since ffolnj* into the business. He was now getting £4/10/- a week, and wl.h a wife and four children could not do much in the way of making an offer to his creditors. The hearing was adjourned sine die.
