EARL’S WEALTH FOR FRIEND

No Mention of Widow in the Will

Earl Russell, who died at Marseilles last March aged 65, left the greater part of his fortune of £10,130 to a friend, Miss Amy Otter, whom he had known for 33 years. The widow, Countess Russell, famous as the author of “Elizabeth and Her German Garden,” is not mentioned in the will.

Apart from a few small bequests to servants, Miss Otter is the only beneficiary.

Miss Otter, who is an Inspector for the Ministry of Health, was with the

Earl when he died. Sbe helped to nurse him in his illness. He once told her: “You are the most faithful friend I have ever had." “It was the greatest surprise of my life to be told that Earl Russell had left to me the greatest part of his fortune,” she said. “He was a great and charming man.” Asked if the family of the late Earl were in any way pained by the will, Miss Otter replied: “Of course not. We are the greatest of friends. I am about to spend the week-end with them.”
