HUTT VALLEY RAILWAY
Local Bodies Want Extension Local bodies in the Hutt Valley are actively endeavouring: to get the railway extended from Waterloo to Silverstream, the work to be done under the No. 5 scheme. h a^ be *P a y° r of Petone, Mr. D. McKenzie, S< ? nt the following letter to the Prime and copies to the Minister of Public Works, and the Minister of Railways:— T - J . bo obliged,” said Mr. McKenzie. if you would, in conjunction -with . A J ini ster of Public Works and the Minister of Railways, consider the undermentioned matters, in view of the importance of the same to the community as a whole and this district in particular:— T^ e fi , nalisln £ of what is consldto be the best and proper route for ex t e nsion northw’ard of the present railway deviation in the Valley. No doubt consideration of this matter would be by the Public Works and Railway Departments to the approval of the Town Planning Board. (b) If such a decision has been reached, would you please give an Indication when the work will be commenced? (c) To consider the electrification of the railway line to Wellington in the proposed extension scheme. (d) In view of changing modern conditions, consideration would have to be given no doubt to the question of whether this district and the Wairarapa would be as well or better served by a well laid out arterial roadway with modern transport buses. My reason in bringing this matter forward is that the carrying out of the work would provide useful and profitable employment to hundreds of men in this district who are at present serving under the No, 5 unemployment scheme.”
