Chamber of Commerce Idea

CLOTHING THE HILLS On the motion of Mr. A. Seed, the Wellington Chamber of Commerce decided last evening to recommend the City Council that all labour absorbed under No. 5 scheme be engaged in tree-planting operations on appropriate areas of vacant city lands. . , The chairman, Mr. C. J. B. Norwood, said that when he was Mayor of Wellington, the Hon. Sir Heaton Rhodes, who was then Minister in Charge of Forestry, actually offered to plant the hills, but owing to a legal difficulty nothing eventuated. . • .. , In supporting the motion, Mr. Norwood suggested that there might .even be some liberal members of the public who would subscribe trees. Other members expressed themselves as being whole-heartedly in favour of Mr. Steel’s recommendation.
