WENT IN TO PRAY
Stole from Church Instead CURIOUS DUNEDIN CASE Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, July 6. Petty thefts from the Roman«Catho11c Cathedral have been taking place for some time, including, a small box containing about 10/- in pennies which recently disappeared from the porch. To-day, Joseph George Kearsley pleaded guilty to stealing three tables and two chairs valued at £4/2/6, the property of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Dunedin; Chief-Detective Quartermain said accused admitted stealing the tables and chairs, .which he sold to secondhand dealers, but he denied stealing the money. He was a man of some culture and a teacher of the pianoforte and violin, but had five previous convictions for theft The curious part of it added the chief-detective, is that he says he went into the church to pray. Accused was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on the first charge and ordered to come up for sentence within six months on the other two charges.
