SPEED PLANE MISHAP

Schneider Trophy Practice PILOT UNHURT British Wireless. Rugby, July 8. One of the S 6 aircraft used for training purposes by the high-speed flight now engaged in practice for the Schneider Trophy at Calshot had to alight to-day on' Southampton Water owing to a minor defect. ' In landing in a cross-wind in. the wake of a passing steamer the seaplane overturned and sank. The seaplane was piloted by FlightLieutenant Hope, who freed himself from the machine and was swimming when he was picked up by an attendant service boat. Hope was practically unhurt. Efforts are being made, with the cooperation of the Comniander-in-Chief of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth, to salve the machine, and divers are being sent to tho spot for this purpose.
