INTER-CLUB GOLF

Waiwetu and Manor Park HONOURS EVEN An inter-club match beeween Waiwetu and Manor Park was played on the Waiwetu links on Saturday afternoon, both teams winning eleven games. The match for the Watt Cup, between the ten leading players on each side, resulted in a victory for Waiwetu by 8 points to 6J, Wniwetu winning seven games to 3. The weather was fine, but a fairly stiff northerly wind had to bo contended with. B.’Duncan, who was promoted tn tbe honour of No. 1 for Waiwetu, justified the confidence reposed in him'by defeating H. Burns by 3 up and 1 to go. Neither player was at his best on the outward journey, which each accomplished in 46, to stand all square at the turn. Better golf ,was seen on the way home. Steadier work, on the greens enabled Duncan to finish the match at the 17th, where he took the honours by 3 and 1. Duncan returned in 41 to Burns’ 44, giving the Waiwetu man 87 for the round to his opponent’s 90. The Manor Park No. l is a very long driver, but his tendency to press got him into trouble several times. Duncan would improve his game if he were to hit his putts firmly, instead of stroking them as he does at present. The best golf in the match was played by A. G. Flanagan, No. 2 for Waiwetu. He was in brilliant form on the outward journey against Gilbertson,. doing the first nine in even 4’s. Gilbertson here had to retire owing to indisposition, giving Flanagan the match by the maximum margin, 10 up and 8 to play. Mr. H. Firth, the captain of theWaiwetu Club, in welcoming the visitors, said that there was a fellow-feeling between the two clubs. “You are troubled by floods, and we are troubled by trotting clubs, he said. The Waiwetu Club was ip the throes of redesigning some of its holes, and when next the Manor Park players visited Waiwetu he promised that they would have a more interesting course to play over. Mr.’E. W. Brockett, captain of tho Manor Park Club, in thanking the home club for its hospitality, endorsed what Mr. Firth had said regarding the fellowfeeling beeween two of the oldest clubs in the Watt Cup competition. e \ • A most enjoyable match terminated with an exchange of cheers \ The following are the results, the Waiwetu player being mentioned first in each instance:-— -J-
