THE RACING WORLD

HASTINGS RACES ■ Very Successful Fixture BON ARYAN WINS DOUBLE '' (By "The Watcher.”) Tho conclusion Of the winter meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club at Hastings on Saturday witnessed one of, the brightest day’s racing held in the bay over a considerable period. Attraijted by a sunny, mild day, the public attended In large numbers, the crowd being reminiscent of the days before the slump in racing there. No doubt there is at present a considerable floating population in Hastings, which added to the crowd, and also local folk felt inclined to treat themselves’ to a day's racing for a change; but the fact remains that there was more life and spirit In the fixture than has been the case for several years. Under prevailing financial conditions a large turnover on the machine could not be expected, but the sum of £9172 for the day was only £974 less than on the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £15,062, compared with £19,181, a decrease 0f:£4119. Saturday’s excellent result and the figures and attendance each day amply confirm the judgment of the officials in their decision to hold the meeting and keep Hawke’s Bay on the racing map. The track was in good order, and the racing interesting. The principal event, the July Steeplechase, was a better contest than the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase the first day, but the field was not a good , one, and Bon Aryan again won easily. The Hawke’s Bay Hurdles was won by the outsider. Princess Elizabeth, while the open flat race saw a win for the consistent Manifesto. Goshawk's Bad Buck. Backers accepted a short price about Goshawk In the Hack Hurdles, and they Were unlucky in not collecting first dividend, as his rider lost an Iron at the last fence. Winter Day, Battlement, and Bennanee led Goshawk iu the running. Winter Day was clear at the last fence, with Goshawk challenging. Goshawk stumbled

on landing,, and his gear broke. Under difficulties his rider was nevertheless overhauling Winter Day fast, but he failed by a neck. Day I.ass was three lengths away third, with Evening Hero fourth, then Battlement and Bennanee. King’s Polly lost his rider at the first fence. Goshawk was a certainty beaten by bad' luck. The winner, nevertheless, maintained his useful form. It was his first start over hurdles. A Promising Sort. ■Royal Hunting was confidently expected by good judges in the Trial Plate, and he started favourite, but owing to really remarkable wagering spread.over the card he paid a ulee price. He began with the leaders, and ran to the front in the first furlong from Lotus Lily, Happy Hit, Curie, Hystride, and Moatoa. Once Royal Hunting took charge the others were unable to threaten hlitf at all seriously, and he won by three lengths from Beverage, who beat Hystride by a longth. Chief Savage was fourth, with Vltaphone handy, then Curie and Nea Lap. The,winner had the speed to carry his opponents off their feet in the early stages. He Is a good galloper. Beverage did not hold a good early position, but he "ran a fine race,' and would have been closer with a better - beginning. Lotus Lily made a good showing, but lacked the condition to run on. Bon Aryan’s Double. Bon Aryan, winner of the Hawke’s Bay Steeples the first- day, scored another comfortable win In the July Steeplechase, for which he was a firm favourite. Pangolin and Cloyne ran oft at the second fence, leaving Handy and Bo.u Aryan In front. They drew right away’ from the others. Bon Aryan went to the front five furlongs from home, and won by six lengths from Handy. Kaokaoroa was sixty yards back third, with Dapper Boy fourth, and Beau Regal next. Revel ran off at the sod wall, but taken back, completed the course. Bon Aryan gave an Improved display, and was always the winner. , Pangolin seems to have taken a dislike to the busl'ness. ■' . Success for Outsider. Princess Elizabeth, outsider of the seven runners in the Hawke’s • Bay Hurdles, scored a surprise win, the favourites. Red Fuchsia and Tunbridge, finishing third and

second. Tunbridge had n lead of several lengths at the end of six furlongs, but his rider let him run wide Into line, and he also ran out in*tho run horned Princess Elizabeth, who had run up to him at the last fence, beating him by halt a length. Red Fuchsia was a moderate third, where he had been throughout, with Gaze fourth, then Rakauponga and Cook. The winner is an elder half-sister to Royal Routine and Royal Hunting. She appreciated the extra Quarter of a mile. All the same, it looked as if Tunbridge should have won. Red Fuchsia ran only a fair race, and considering the weak class was disappointing. Gaze pulled up broken down, and Fine Acre lost his rider when well back. Cook jumped very poorly. Blacksmith Comfortably. The Warden, with Mr. J. Morris up, started favourite for the Ladles’ Race, but ho was comfortably defeated by the second choice, Blacksmith, after he had every chance out In front. Blacksmith, who lay third and handy throughout, beat him easily by a length and ,a half at the finish, with Day Lass a similar distance back third, and False Scent fourth. Mr. J. D. Ormond rode a good race on the winner. Adventus Improve*. Adveutus, who had failed when favourite the first day, was given a chance again by backers in the hack once-round, and, improved by the race, he carried them through. Wee Boy made most of the running, Adventus and Manulri well placed. Manulrl and Adventus had the race to themselves In the straight. Air Laddlo was with them for a few strides, but then his condition gave out, Adventus eventually winning a hardfought finish from Manulri by half a length. Air Laddie was six lengths back third, with Sir Moment fourth from Wee Boy. ■ Adventus improved sufficiently to just win, the first day’s winner, Cook, being out of the road. Air Laddie was short of condition, and will improve. For a long way he was going very well. ! \ ’ Consistency Rewarded. When B. H. Morris got up on Moa Bird in the concluding event, the majority of backers abandoned form and installed her a better favourite than the first pair .of

the opening day, Manifesto and Taranto. Kahlkatoa was poorly away after the field had given trouble, Arrowzone shooting away with Cuticle from Manifesto, then the bunch, headed by Moa Bird and Taranto. Kahlkatoa had moved up to a more prominent position on the homo turn, and Cuticle led Manifesto, Arrowzone, Moa Bird, and Kahlkatoa Into line. Manifesto took charge at the last furlong, and won ’by well over a length from Kahlkatoa, who got up in the last strides to beat Cuticle by half a head. Briar Root was fourth, followed at intervals by Taranto and Head Serang. 1 Manifesto deserved his win, as he has been a real consistent trier for several weeks now. He has Improved a lot. Kahlkatoa was unlucky, and it Is probable he would have won with an even break. Cuticle showed her best form on the circuit, but was not good enough. Briar Root was again finishing strongly, and Head Serang ran a fair-race. Moa Bird had every chance. TE HOIA’S WIN Taumarunui Races STEEPLES TO DAY LARK Red Lion at Last Dominion Special Service. Auckland, July 4. The Taumarunui Racing Club’s meeting opened at Ellerslie to-day. The weather was fine, and the attendance fair. .The track-was heavy. The totalisator handled £19,375/10/-. Billy Boy and Town Beauty were bucked a® named in the Hunters’ Hurdles, and In a hard race from the turn Billy Boy wore his rival down to win all out by a length. General Lu was with Town Beauty till the home turn, but the others made a poor showing. Billy. Boy, as usual, jumped in finished style. Vandyke was a pronounced favourite for the Tarlngamutu Handicap. Grand Talk made the running from Valroe, Catoma, and Vandyke, who had lost a couple of lengths at -the start. Valroe took charge at the turn, and held off Vandyke and Lucy Rose, to win attractively. Puriri Park ran a fair race, and Catoma was close up, and should Improve, with the race. Even betting on the Taumarunui Handicap found Gay Cockade and Te Hoia in demand, and after Gay Cockade had made the pace from Trlshna and Flying Prince, Te Hola got a run through at the turn to wear Gay Cockade down and win by anarrow margin. Flying Prince was a fair third, 1 and Barometer next. True Blood, who is still a little above himself, never looked-a winner. . Standfast was slow away, and then ran well tb the turn. Dark Prince, favourite for the Manunul Hurdles, lacked speed, and could only get fourth after finishing well. St. Ames took charge five furlongs from home,* but was tackled at,the last fence by Justify and Patntahi, the latter finishing well, to win a good race, Patutahi for the first, time' ran up . to track form, and he should improve. Owalraka and Cool Mint stopped badly over the last half-mile, but Justify, who was at a good price, ran very encouragingly. . ■ X' Town Beauty was a hot favourite for the Waltuhl Steeplechase. He and Day Lark were, always disputing. the lead, but although Town Beauty had a good lead coming down the hill, Day Lark came again and beat him handily at the finish. Quinsllla and Arapawa fell at the first fence, and of the others Royal Visitor made a fair showing. Day Lark has not been- in work long, but he is distinctly promising. Grand Spirit and Taurus carried the money in the Owhango Handicap. Red Lion began fast an’d led all the way to win comfortably from Grand- Spirit and Sub-Editor, who dead-heated for second, with Taurua fourth. The winner had previously only won a small race in Australia, and he has been a'bad pro-position since his purchase as a yearling for 1000 guineas. He never looked a loser to-day.' The deadheaters ran solid races, without having a chance with the winner. Tetrachate was a warm favourite for .the Bangaroa Handicap. Full Measure was badly left, and after Ruffles and Flying Prince had led to the turn, the favourite came on to win handily from Flying Prince and Ruffles. Full Measure ran a great race, after losing a lot of ground, nnd he mast have been bard to -boat. -> Details of the Racing By Telegraph—Press Association.
