EMERALD—THE GEM OF MAY
The love of precious stones is a human instinct. In their glittering substance we see reflected the fair colours of the flowers. the blue of the sky, and the glory of the sunset, not fading and transitory, but apparently enduring for ever. There has always been a mystery of magic about gems. Men have imbued them with the supernatural power of attracting the desirable things of life and repelling the evil. They were even supposed to cure certain complaints. Perhaps they did, for in these enlightened days we have learnt the value of autosuggestion, and, as Napoleon said, imagination rules the world, writes Marigold Watney in the “Morning Post.” In medieval days astrologers and seers firmly believed that each gem possessed an affinity with a star or planet. This superstition also existed In prehistoric days, and the precious stones discovered in ancient tombs were worn as talismans and not for ornament.
According to the ancient lore, all who are born in May should wear an emerald, and if we follow the dictates of the magictans. life will indeed be made easy. These stones are imbued with many powers; they foreshadow future events and also have a disconcerting habit of revealing treachery In love affairs. A far more useful characteristic of this stone is the gift of bestowing eloquence. To derive the full benefit it is necessary to place it under the tongue for a few moments before uttering a word. This may be a valuable hint for some public speakers! The emerald also endowers the wearer with' wisdom, and, as Candano declares, honesty as well, for “dishonesty is nothing but ignorance, stupidity, and ill-nature.” The old traditions state that those possessing the emerald for their birth stone have Amriel for their guardian angel. Their sign of the Zodiac Is Gemini. and their flower the hawthorn. The warning advising the. wearing of the birth stone has been set in verse: “Who first beholds the light of day In spring’s sweet flow'ry month of May. And wears an emerald all her life. Shall be a loved and happy wife. No happier wife and mother in the land. Than she with emerald shining on her hand."
