NO PRIZES THIS YEAR

Certificates for Wellington Colleges Following a suggestion made by Mr. VV. A. Armour, -headmaster of Wellington College, the Wellington Colleges’ Board of Governors decided yesterday not to make the usual grant of £25 to each of its schools for the purchase of prizes this year. Certificates will be givqp m place of prizes and for this purpose the board will make a grant of £5 to each SC In 01 a letter to the board, Mr. Armour suggested that of the £25 usually allowed for prizes, £5 should be retained for certificates and for stamping any prizes that might be donated. He further suggested that he be given permission to use the remaining £2O, as far as the boys college was concerned, by spending on the woodwork class and £8 on the library. In the discussion that followed it was pointed out that the £l2 mentioned by Mr. Armour for the woodwork class was provided for under the manual and science capitation grant. Members were unanimous in deciding that, in sucn times as the present, prizes were things that could be cut down, and a motion that certificates should take their place this year was passed. It was also pointed out that if only £5. were allowed each school this year a small grant could be made toward the libraries, and the board would still make a saving.
