Distress Relief Funds
Sir,—l note recently an article in Jour folunum which states that so far the Mayor’s distress fund has not been administered. Can you tell me when this will be used for the purpose that the public are subscribing to it? What is the use of accumulating it and letting it grow to a larger total? Surely the idea of such a fund was to give immediate relief where necessary; the public, lam ■ure, are of this opinion. I understand that last Week one distribution was goin„ to be made from the fund of £5 to each of the societies attending to uiatters. Why has this payment not been made before? It makes the public very disgusted not to see more urgency applied. I also note in your columns to-day an article dealing with the £200,000 Canteen Fund. It says, “By careful .manage ment the administrators have built it up to its present generous proportions. . . . it would seem good policy to conserve the principal against a day when no more can be looked for by public action. 1 am sure it is indeed very creditable for the administrators. to have built.up such < total, but what is the use of this, fu frf it is never to be used. * rr/vwi I understand that there is still £5OOO left over from the Murchison disaster that fenot being used What more necessary times can be found for the part use of the Canteen Fund than now? If the Mayor’s appeal to citizens is all that we are told, then why the delay in using some of this money now, P. to cases that need urgent assistance/ t ato - et^ SG U STB D SUBSCRIBER. fThe statement made was that on the date referred to the Mayors fund was hitact, but that it was to be encroached upon to the extent of £5. for each discommittee.
