AID FOR Y.W.C.A.

Street Appeal in City To-day HOSTELS FOR GIRLS Holding a special street day to-day to augment its funds, the Y.W.C.A. is, an organisation with many and varied activities. The money which is collected will not be devoted to one specific branch of their social service, such as that dealing with the unemployed girls, but will go into the general fund, from which it will be distributed as it is required. In 'connection with .its unemployed girls’ division, 200 out of the 600 girls registered have been found positions, and for those who are still workless there is a handicrafts class twice weekly, a darning and mending club, and- a special class for stenographers, to minimise the chances of their losing speed while unemployed. Some of those at present without an employer are very competent, but they have been put out of their positions by the reductions in staffing and by firms going out of business. The association endeavours to carry out this purpose in many ways. In Brougham Street there is a residence where 73 business and industrial girls and students live together. There is the hostel in Boulcott Street, where holi-day-makers may find comfortable accommodation for a moderate fee, and where domestics awaiting a new position may reside. The lounge of this hostel is a gathering place for many a girl who has only one room and no space to entertain her friends. There is also a wellsupported cafeteria at the Boulcott Street hostel where girls who bring their own lunches may buy a cup of hot tea for a small charge. The upkeep of the central building at Boulcott Street, as well as the additional expense of the friendly service bureau, is a heavy drain on the association’s finances, and the board of directors is hoping for a ready response to to-day’s appeal.
