TO-DAY’S SPORTS

Rugby at Athletic Park

SOCCER AND LEAGUE There should be few vacant seats at Athletic Park this afternoon, as two important matches in the senior A Rugby championship will be decided there. The first is between University and Athletic, at 1.15 p.m., and it should provide plenty of excitement, as both teams have been showing improved form within the past few weeks. ,

One of the best games of the season should be seen between the two Hutt Valley fifteens, Hutt and Petone, who will take the field at 2.45 p.m. Though Hutt has only been beaten once this season. there are many who believe that Petone, whose colours have been lowered four times, will triumph over their next floor neighbours. Whoever wins, the contest should be a thrilling one. Oriental and Poneke will meet at Newtown Park, Berhamnore and Wellington College Old Boys will oppose, each other at Wakefield Park, Wellington and Miramar will play at Lyall Bay, and Marist will cross the harbour to engage Eastbourne. Association Football. The second round of the championship will start when Diamonds meet Watersiders and Seatoun play W.Y.M.I. at the Basin Reserve this afternoon. The game between Diamonds and" Watersiders should prove a good one. Diamonds are at top form, playing great football, and can be relied upon to play first-class football. Watersiders have strengthened their team, and are now a tough proposition. The team play is good, and their combination is excellent. They will make the pace a fast and merry one, and should fully extend Diamonds. . On No. 2 ground Seatoun and W.Y.M.I. should stage an interesting game. In their previous match the game ended in a draw. Since then W.Y.M.I. has been training steadily, and should give Seatoun a hard game. Two good curtain-raisers will be played before the above games. Golf Competitions. An inter-club match will be played between Shandon and Waiwetu on the Shandon links to-day. Manor Park and Titahi Bay will also play an inter-club match to-day, on the Titahi links. A teams’ match, four players a-side, will be played on the Hutt links this afternoon. Players will arrange teams, and post entries will be received at the club-house. , A three-section stroke competition will be played on the Miramar links to-day. The qualifying round for the Webb Memorial for juniors will also be played. A match will be played on the Waiwetu links this afternoon between the Shandon and Waiwetu ladies’ clubs. The Titahi Ladies’ Club will play the second round of the eclectic match during the week-end. Hockey Championship Competitions. The hockey championship competition will be continued this afternoon. Two good games should be seen at Karori Park, where Karori will Varsity, and Wellington will oppose Wesley, in the senior A competition. The match between Hutt and Y.M.C.A. on the Hutt recreation ground should also be well worth seeing. Women’s Hockey. The two leading teams in the senior A grade, College Old Girls and Swifts, will meet at Newtown Park this afternoon at 3 o’clock. Both teams hold an unbroken record, and a fast, thrilling encounter is confidently anticipated. Huia and Training College will oppose each other at Newtown Park at 2 p.m., on No. 1. while on the adjoining ground at the same time College Old Girls and Swifts, of the senior B grade, will meet. Wenerei play Varsity on No. 2 at 3 p.m. Karori, the leading team in the senior B competition,, will play Training College at Karori Park No. 1, at 2 p.m. _ The Tanera Crescent matches are: Centics v. Technical Old Girls, and Technical College v. Wenerei, at 2 p.m.; while at 3 p.m. College Old Girls play Huia, and Technical College B play Karori. Harriers. Club.runs will constitute the harrier programme in Wellington to-day. The Brooklyn and Wellington harriers will meet at Lyall Bay. Olympic at Hataitai. and Scottish at Miramar. Much interest attaches to the Kennett Cup race, which is being held at Christchurch. .The sole Wellington representative is the Scottish Club, but practically the whole of the Otago and Canterbury club strength is entered. Another event of note is the annual race for the Sanders Cup, between the Hutt Valley and Masterton clubs, at Masterton. Road Cycling Events. Two amateur road cycling races will be held this afternoon. The race for rider* registered with the N.Z.A.A.A. starts from the Petone Rowing Club’s shed at 2.45 p.m., and that for N.Z.U.C. riders from the Kilbirnie Post Office, at 2 p.m.
