ANOTHER RECORD
More Unemployed
TOTAL OVER 44,000
A total of 44,482 men were registered ’.as unemployed at labour bureaux throughout New Zealand, for the week ended June 15, according to returns supplied yesterday by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. S. G. Smith. This constitutes another record, being 1029 in excess of the number registered during the previous seven days. The Minister said that although the apparent increase in unemployment was 1029, the number of men who qualified under the No. 5 scheme and were placed in work totalled 33,751. A total of 4466 were engaged under the 4a scheme, and 603 under the 4b scheme. The total number of men for whom no work was found was 5662. Of that number, however, it was probable that a large percentage was not eligible for employment during the week, and many, no doubt, could not be placed owing to physical disability. Particulars of the registration? in the main centres were as follow:—
Invercargill .. 670 322 The total registrations in the main centres were as follow, the figures for the previous week being given in parentheses:—Auckland, 6198 (6122) ; Wellington, 4346 (4180); Christchurch, 4903 (4905); Dunedin, 2681 (2574); Invercargill, 992 (1030). Taking the final figures of the return on their face value, it compares as fol-
lows with the previous returns
The number provided with work last week is the highest since the present system was inaugurated, and the number remaining unemployed is the smallest. UNEMPLOYED GIRLS Registrations at Y.W.C.A. Bureau During the past week 42 girls and women registered as unemployed’at the Friendly Service Bureau for unemployed women and girls, making the total registrations 642. To date 246 positions have been filled, and late last night there were seven residing positions; four non-resi-dent. and six country positions offering. These were all of a domestic nature. Girls who have failed to keep in close touch with the bureau are asked to register during the coming week. In a notice issued by the Y.W.C.A. girls who are near the end of their resources are reminded that the friendly services of the bureau are at their disposal. When necessary, financial assistance is arranged in an unostentatious manner, and in every way girls are encouraged to retain their selfrespect. At present there is a slump in the darning and mending depot, and darning as well as orders for plain sewing would be thankfully received. At 4.30 to-morrow afternoon girls living in rooms will be the guests of the Y.W.C.A. at a social hour, followed by tea. All girls are assured of a warm welcome and a happy time.
