“Fire Purposely Done” INSURANCE CLAIM FAILS By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, June 18. Allegations that batteries had been bought for a few pence each and were then painted and insured for £lOO were made by counsel appearing for the Northern Assurance Company to-dny m a case where John Howard William Tapp claimed £lOO under a policy on goods destroyed by a fire on April 21. The plaintiff, in his evidence, admitted having made mistakes in the policy’ proposal. Examined by counsel for the company he refused to answer certain questions and declared: “You are suggesting that this fire was purposely done. Counsel: Yes, I am. Plaintiff was nonsuited, the magistrate saying that the claim was properly a case to be dealt with under the arbitration clause in the policy. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL Threatening Letter Alleged By Telegraph—Press Association. Timnru, June 18. In the Magistrate’s Court John William Roundhill, poultry farmer, of Fairlie, wns committed for trial on a charge of having sent a threatening letter to John Kennedy, chairman of the South Canterbury Power Board. The aliened offending words were : We pledge ourselves to see that you both are removed out of harm’s way, cither knifa ox Mexican medicine.”
