HOSPITAL ON TOP

Wellington Competition SATURDAY’S PLAY Two Players Injured Only three first division games were played in Wellington on Saturday, i’etone and Diamonds having byes, as each had several players in the representative team at Auckland. Waterside just won by the only goal ot the match against Seatoun; Hospital was too good for W.Y.M.L. mid Marist just romped home against Thistle. Whelan, of Thistle, had a blood vessel broken at the back of one of his eyes, and Marshment, Marist, broke a blood vessel in his right ankle just after scoring the third goal for Marist. Both were taken to hospital. WATERSIDE v. SEATOUN Poor Game at Basin Reserve Waterside defeated Seatoun at the Basin Reserve. The standard of play throughout was poor, particularly that of the Seatoun forwards, who failed to find form once throughout the game. Wilson was handicapped with a sprained ankle, which caused the two wingers to change places. This move did not tend to Improve matters for tho Seatoun vanguard. Waterside, aided by a strong northerly •wind, kept Seatoun busy defending. From a corner Parkin relieved a dangerous situation by punching well out. Seatoun pressed, but Wilson missed an easy chance ot scoring by shooting wide. A strong attack by Waterside resulted- in Long bottom back-heeling to Lack, who drove hard into the net. Waterside 1, Seatoun 0. Seatoun forced the game, but faulty

shooting prevented It scoring an easy goal. Waterside launched a determined attack, keeping Newton and Otter busy. I.ack sent in a bard shot which Parkin saved in splendid style. A run on the left wing by Garrod was stopped by Abernethy at the expense ot a corner, but tho flag kick went wide. Several good moves by Seatoun were spoilt by bad shooting. Parkin effected throe good saves in quick succession, from Longbottom, Dunsmuir mid I.ack. With Waterside nearly through, Newton cleared with a hefty kick, which sent Seatoun away. A good centre by Wilson was snapped up by E. Kershaw, whose shot missed by inches.

A good move on the waterside right-wing brought play into 'the goal area. Dunsmuir shot from close In, but Parkin cleared cleverly. Seatoun retaliated with a lightning attack. E. Kershaw bit the bar with

a rising shot, and McKenzie, who was lying handy, badly missed mi open goal. In the second spell Seatoun strove bard for the equaliser, but again faulty shooting and bail combination prevented a score. Several corners were forced, but the flag kick in each case went wide. A free kick to Seatoun was taken by Otter, whose shot hit the bar, but before the forwards could get possession, Bolton cleared. In the closing stages both teams strove bard to improve their position, but without result, and the game ended: Waterside 1, Seatoun 0. Mr. C. G. Smith was the referee. MARIST v. THISTLE Very One-sided Contest | Marist showed a great recovery of form at the Basin Reserve on Saturday, and simply made hacks oC its opponents, Thistle, which was surprising, in view of the fact that the blues were only beaten by Hospital by the odd goal in three the previous Saturday. Marist forwards were more aggressive from the start, and had apparently learned that to score goals some, shooting must be done. Thistle bad the best of the opening exchanges, but the left-wing sboM.’u weakness in getting the ball to the centre. Marist then put in some bright work on the left-wing, Burke sending to Cudby in the corner, and the centre passed on tho ground almost on the goal line. Clunas failed to touch it, and fortunately for him a Marist forward was not up. A moment after Barton put in a brilliant shot, low and hard, but Clunas gathered it well and cleared. Todd sent to Cunningham, who slipped the ball between the backs, giving Martin an opening, and he put the leather in goal out of reach of Turkington. Some good combined work saw the Thistle men on the defensive, Hopper and Montgomery being kept busy, the latter saving once within inches of an upright. As the ball went into 'the open, Burke sent to CudDj, and a centre came in from which Scott left Clunas guessing, and the teams were on even terms. Before one could count 100 Marshment wont through solo, and scored a bcautv, which Clunas had no chance of saving. " Marist 2, Thistle 1. Hardly had the game been going another live minutes when the green forwards rushed the Thistle defence. Hopper closed with Condon, who touched the leather on one side, and Marshment, following up, netted again. Marist 3, Thistle 1. Then Scott skied a ball over the top when only live yards out. Two great centres from Johnson promised well for Thistle, but Bird headed one clear from close under the bar, while Stuart was too impetuous in taking the other, and could not get a shot in. The half-time score was: Marist 3, Thistle 1. Marshment received a severe injury to his right leg as he shot a third goal, and had to retire. After examination lie was removed to hospital, Whelan, Thistle, received an injury to an eye from the ball, and was also removed to hospital for treat- • merit when the interval arrived. It transpired that Marshment had broken a blood vessel in his ankle, and Whelan bad broken a blood vessel in the back of the eye. On resuming the Marist forwards were soon up among the Thistle defence, and the ball passed from loft to right for Barton to net an easy one. Scott soon followed with another, the Marist forwards simply overwhelming the Thistle defence. The game now became very one-sided, and the feebleness of the blue forwards was demonstrated when Todd, six yards from goal, and well clear of tho backs, only having the goalie to beat, missed by yards. From the goal kick Ilindle sent across to Cudby. He put straight to Condon, for the latter to practically walk the ball into goal. Marist G, Thistle 1. Barton added a seventh from a corner, and Scott followed with two more. Thistle was routed. The dual score was: Marist 9, Thistle 1. Mr. N. Brian was the referee. HEAVY SCORING Hospital Rout W.Y.M.L If Diamonds until Saturday held pride of place on goal averages, Hospital mended matters by inflicting defeat on W.Y.M.L. at Hospital, by 9 goals to 1. The difference between the teams was not. so marked in the first half, when Hospital led at halftime by 3-1. the scorers being -Stanbridge, Marshall and Lambert, and Minify netted for W.Y.M.L In the second spell W.Y.M.L could not stand up to the pace set by tho Hospital team, which had matters practically its own way, and put on six more goals, to which the opposing side failed to respond. The scorers in the second spell were Stanbrldge, J. Tre wick, Lam'bert (2), W. Woods, and Ell one from a penalty kick. ' Mr. J. Sanderson was the referee.
