20-MILE ROAD RACE

Win for Blackett AMATEURS’ CONTEST Over a new course on Saturday afternoon, the Port Nicholson Cycling Club, affiliated to the New Zealand Union ot Cyclists, staged a 20-mile road race in which 24 amateur riders competed, ine race was won by F. Blackett, from the smin. mark, a consistent young rider who did fairly well for himself during the last track and road season. C. Crockford, a new member, came second, and B. vvioiiri. another new member, third. L. Roberts, who was alone on the scratch mark, rode a good race to win fastest time. Black t won second time honours. , The starting point for Saturdays race was near the Kilbirnie Post Office, and the riders traversed a 94-mile course twice before finishing at Miramar Wharf. There was a northerly blowing, and the shingle made the event a good test of road riding. Officials were stationed at various points along the course. About three miles from the starting point, T. Udall, who won the week before, with P. Grant, was making fastest time. They were followed closely bv G. Staveley. who had dropped A. Pennington and D. Shadwick. Roberts, who was the next man, had gained the best part of a mintue on the nearest bunch the 21min. men. A. Dickie fell. Reaching the same point on the second lap. Blackett and Crockford were in the lead. Bnrne, Wiblin, Campbell. McCabe. Risbridger. Evans, and Aldridge were next. Roberts then came along, at the end of a lap. done in 24*mm. A. Pennington was unlucky enough to crash and injure his head slightly before the second lap had gone far. J. Campbell, who was using patent gears, rode strongly and impressively against tne wind. Placings were as follow. —
