Total Now Over 40,000 MANY MEN PLACED Past Week’s Registrations The total number of unemployed registered in New Zealand during the week ended May 25 was 40,507, as compared with 39,553 for the previous week, according to figures supplied by the Minister of Labour, Hon. S. G. Smith. The apparent increase was 954, but the returns show that although new and renewed applications for work totalled 3379, during the week 24,329 men qualified and were placed in work under the Unemployment Board's No. 5 scheme, which meant that the real increase for the week was 5385, leaving 16,178 men still unemployed. . The total registrations in the main centres were as follow, the figures for the previous week being given in pare®” thesels: Auckland, 5546 (5280); Wellington, 3622 (3814); Christchurch, 4676 (i4IQ); Dunedin, 2343 (2314); Invercargill, 950 (904). ......
