SIDEY MEDAL
“Summer-time” Research As has already been announced. Sir Thomas Sidey has offered to donate a medal for tlie best paper on tlie advantages of “Summer-time.” The standing committee of the New Zealand Institute reported to the annual meeting as follows: — “In April Dr. Cockayne and Professor Kirk were asked to suggest a design for the proposed sninmer-time medal. They suggested that the obverse side should bear
the donor in profile, and Hint tlie reverse side the design should represent the sun’s rays from above with tlie sun’s
disc or portion of it. while below on each side should be representations of Ceres mid Hygeiu. These suggestions Were
approved by members of the standing committee and by Sir Thomas Sidey, and tlie medals will bo ready by .May. Sir Thomas Sidey in fulfilment of his promise fo donate the medal forwarded his cheque for £l2O to cover the cost of it.” It was contended by some of the governors that the calling for applications by public advertising might deter tlie best
and perhaps, the most competent scientific men from participating. Mr. M. A. Eliott took tlie opposite view. He thought that tlie spirit of tlie donor was that application should be wide open to all. especially junior members of tlie community.
Finally it was decided to make an “announcement” (not advertisement) about the Sidey Modal in tlie principal papers of the Dominion six months before the medal was awarded.
