RETIRING TEACHERS

Farewelled by Board

Three teachers retiring on superannuation attended the meeting of the Wellington Education Board yesterday. They were Mr. J. B. Grant, headmaster,, Karori; Miss D. L, W. Edwards, infant mistress, Kelburn; and Miss W. L. Stevens, assistant mistress, 'Mount Cook. Miss E. W. Wanden, assistant mistress, Mount Cook, who is also retiring, was unable to attend.

The chairman, Mr. T. Forsyth, congratulated the teachers upon retiring , on superannuation, and spoke highly of the long and faithful services they had rendered. Miss Stevens had spent practically her whole life at Mount Cook. Miss Edwards had specialised in infants’ work, taking special classes in her own time at her own expense. Mr. Grant was in Otago before coming to Wellington. Dr. J. Mellwraith, senior inspector, eulogised the services of the retiring teachers, who briefly . acknowledged \ the kindness of the board in farewelling teachers upon their retirement. The records of the teachers are as follow: —

Mr. J. B. Grant, 40 years’ service, of which 26 years was in the South Island ; appointed* head teacher at Hataitai in December, 1923, transferred to Karori in February, 1927, where he remained until his retirement.

Miss Edwards commenced as a pupilteacher at Ohariu School in 1900, and was at Karori m 1901. .From 1905 to 1918 she-served as assistant teacher at South Karori, Karori and Te Aro; was appointed infant mistress at Te Aro in 1920, and to Kelburn Normal School in 1928 from'which she now retires.

Miss Stevens spent her.first three years at Te Aro Infant School, was ex-pupil teacher at Mount Cook Boys’ School for four years; assistant mistress, Karori, 34 years; transferred to Mount Cook Girls’ School in August, 1905, where she regained until February, 1926, when she was appointed to Mount Cook Main School, where her service was completed. Miss Wanden was 24 years and eight months in Blenheim, and was appointed assistant teacher nt Mount Cook School in February, 1927, and has been there ever since.
