TORTURE SHIP SHOWN

Australian Protest Heard

CONVICT STORY REFUTED (Rec. May 19, 7.15 p.m.) New York, May 18. The Australian Office here has lodged a protest with the Seamen’s Church Institute for sponsoring the exhibition of the hulk Success, from which it received half the receipts. Large advertisements had been inserted in the newspapers repeating all the old assertions to the effect that the ship carried convicts, and that there would be an exhibition exhibiting instruments of torture, etc. The Australian Office quotes official documents showing these claims to be false.
