W.E.A. LECTURES
A Geology Course
A class in geology and human geography is being conducted for the Workers’ Educational Association on Friday evenings, by Mr. It. J. Waghorn, M.A., of the Teachers’ Training College. The syllabus is attractive, and in the lectures already given the tutor has discussed the modern views regarding the constitution of the universe, and the origin of various Celestial bodies.
A lecture given on the geology of the ■Wellington region included a study of the time and place of origin of the local rocks, their folding, faulting and warping, and the several “ups and downs” in their eventful history. Features of special interest dealt with were the “Great 'Wellington Fault,” the raised beaches, and the effects of the 1855 earthquake and uplift. Last week's lecture dealt with volcanoes and their distribution, causes and characteristics, types of activity, with special reference to New Zealand.
Future lectures will include the study of earth movements and their causes, the races of man and their origin and distribution, the occurrence and distribution of the important minerals, and the oil industry and problems of population. There will finally be a general survey of the Pacific region. In the discussion hour which follows the tutor’s lecture, students are assisted >n_ their study by the free use of the Workers’ Educational Association library. The course is open to all interested.
