OBITUARY

Mrs. Mary Bird

The death occurred at Waimana, Bay of Plenty, on Tuesday last of Mrs. Mary Bird, at the age'of 80 years. Deceased, who was born an County Clare, Ireland, came as a young woman to Melbourne, where she was employed for some years. In 1881 she came to reside with her brother, the late SergeantMajor J. Nelson, at Napier. That year also she married the late John Bird, and took up a farm at Wallingford. In the year 1903 deceased and her .husband retired and lived in Hastings for three years. Followed a period of fourteen years when they resided with a son. at Mangatarata, then in Church Lane, Waipukurau, with a daughter, Miss A. Bird. Mr. Bird died in 1922,. and the widow went to live with a nephew at Waimana.

The death of the late Mrs. Bird was-a great shock to her family, as on Monday night she retired in her usual health.‘On taking her mother a cup of tea on Tuesday morning Miss Bird found her unconscious, a state from which she failed to rally. The deceased was interred nt Waipukurau. Two daughters and three sons are left, namely, Mrs. F. Cassin, Wellington. Miss A. Bird, Waipukurau, Messrs. J. Bird, Mangatarata. and Mr. C. Bird, Wallingford. Mrs. J. Brown and Mr. William Bird, qf Waipukurau, are step-children. Mr. Henry Brown The death occurred in the Masterton Hospital on Monday night of Mr. Henry Brown, aged 88 years, states a “Dominion” Special Service message from Masterton. Mr. Brown arrived in New Zealand from England "2 years ago. and had resided in the Wairnrapn. chiefly the Palnatua district, for 25 years. He saw service in Taranaki and the Bay of Plenty during the Maori War. His wife predeceased him many years ago. and he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Boyle. Upper Plain. There are also two nephews. Mr. S. T. Millar. Upper Plain, and Mr. Joughing, of Waihi. Tlie funeral will take place to-day., Mrs. M. Woodford At the advanced age of ninety years. Mrs. M. Woodford, an old and respected resident of the Wanganui district, passed away at her residence in Halswell Street on Saturday, states a “Dominion” Special Service message from Wanganui. The-late. Mrs. Woodford euuie to the Wanganui district fifty-six years ago anil commenced farming with licr husband al Brunswick. For the past twenty years she hns lived in retirement in Wanganui. She is survived by five, sons and seven daughters—Messrs. John Woodford, Waihi; William Woodford, Te Kuiti: Joseph Woodford, Waihi; Joshua Woodford. Waitoa; James Woodford. Hamilton ; Mrs. T. G. Philpott, Wanganui; Mb. M. Klink, Pohanginn; Mrs. F. Dargaville: Mrs. W. Ward. Feikling; Mrs. Dr. Johnson. Waitoa; Mrs. Tiddy. Hamilton; and Mrs. Carrol, Hastings.
