WORKLESS GIRLS

Registrations Continue RECORD AT Y.W.C.A. Registration at the Y.W.C.A. Friendly Service Bureau continued during yesterday. One hundred and thirty-eight girls have registered to date. A careful record is being kept of the circumstances of those registering. Care has been taken to avoid duplicating the registering at the Society tor the Protection of Women and Children, a daily check being made. So far 69 per cent, have been girls and young women under thirty years of age. Of these the larger number is of girls under twenty years. Shop, office, industrial and domestic work are the occupations represented. Sixty-two per cent, of the girls are living at home, and though in some cases heeding work because of unemployment of other members in the family, they are not requiring housing. The Y.W.C.A. has received a number of requests for girls to do housework lor a small wage, and in some cases homes have been offered in return for services. As a result it has been possible to place some nine girls. There .is a great need for day work, and, the officials state, it would be of great assistance if offers of a few hours’ work in homes, shops or offices could be made. Arrangements are being made to establish a darning and mending depot at the Y.W.C.A. On and after May 11 work will be received and attended to on the premises. With public support for this enterprise it is hoped to be able to pay s. stated sum per hour to each worker. Plans are also on foot for a handicraft group. Girls will be offered the opportunity of learning to make useful and attractive articles, and efforts will be made to find a sale for these, thus serving the double object of giving pleasant and profitable occupation. In addition the voluntary services of a qualified physical instructress have been secured for a physical culture class for Saturday mornings., A class to assist girls to renovate their clothing will also be started if any wish to avail themselves of the opportunity. Further plans will be made as need arises. • - .
