Mr. Keith Kirk, a New Zealander, has been called to the Bar in London. * * * A ten per cent, reduction in salaries for all officials and a five-day working week for workers is announced by the Canadian Pacific Railway, states a Montreal message. * ♦ * The death is announced in London of Admiral Sir William Hannan Henderson, at the age of 85. He was superintendent of the Devonport Dockyard from 1902 to 1906. • • • The Grand .Lodge of England has appointed Lord Stonehaven Past Senior Grand Warden, and the New Zealanders, Messrs. C. T. Major and G. W. Jack, Past Junior Grand Deacons. The London “Daily Express” understands that the German Government is about to reduce the import duty on wheat, states a London message. This is expected to apply to 20,00(].000 bushels. The New South Wales Attorney-Gene-ral, Mr. A. A. Lysaght, in the Legislative Assembly, has introduced a Bill to make certain law reforms. The Bill provides, inter alia, for the abolition of capital punishment, « * * The Archbishop of Canterbury has returned entirely recovered from his illness, and is resuming his duties, states a London message. He has been enjoying a Mediterranean cruise with the millionaire yachtsman, Mr, J. Pierpont Morgan. * * * Plight of Councils. The plight of some Sydney suburban councils is exemplified by the announcement that the Alexandria municipality is unable to pay wages, and has an overdraft of £ll,OOO and other debts amounting to £3OOO, states a Sydney message. Uncollected rates aggregate £lO.OOO.
