HUTT VALLEY RAILWAY
Government Policy Wanted Something definite concerning the Government proposals to continue the railway. line from. Waterloo Station (Lower Hutt) to Silverstream. was asked at a public meeting at Stokes Valley on Saturday night. Mr. T. Coombe presided. "It. seems to me,” said Mr. Delaney, “that with a tremendous-lot of men unemployed I do not think, the Government could find any better means of giving them work than bv continuing the railway line from Waterloo Station to Silyertsream Station. What would be better than to take steps to open up this country, even if there is a loss on the line? The route has been surveyed for the past four years, and up to a fortnight ago. There must be something in the wind. Thousands of pounds have been spent on useless work, and work wholly provided according to law.” He moved that connection between Waterloo Station and Silverstream Station be gone on with, and sb give work to the unemployed. Continuing. Mr. Delaney said the Minister had said the line had to be done. He had refused to remove the proclamations over land-through which it was intended the railway should go. Mr. Delaney: The Government must declare its policy now, in view of this conference. “I have heard all sorts of reports,” said Mr. George. "The last T heard was that the Railway Department was trying to escape going along the road by putting a tunnel through the hill.” A.motion was carried that efforts be made to get the associations in Stokes Valley. Taitn. Silverstream. and Upper Hutt to act jointly in a deputation to the Minister of Railways.
