GREAT NEW SHIP
Probable Name: Britannia LAST WORD IN SAFETY (Rec. April 9, 10 p.m.). Loudon, April 9. A contract for a second Cunarder, to cost £6,000,000, will shortly be given. The liner now being built by John Brown and Co., of Glasgow, is expected to be named the Britannia. The vessel is not specially designed to recover the Atlantic speed record. The board considers that regularity of service in all weathers combined with the last word in safety and comfort for passengers to be most essential. The reference to the speed of the first new Cunarder apparently is at variance with a statement made recently by the chairman of the Cunard Company. In referring to the projected vessels he mentioned that it would become a practicable proposition to maintain a weekly service with New York with two ships instead of the three running at present. This, of course, would necessitate a considerable increase in speed.
