MUSIC FESTIVAL
Suggestion for Schools MEETING TO BE HELD “As there is to be no ‘music week’ this year,” wrote Mr. E. Douglas Tayler, supervisor of musical education, to the Education Board yesterday, “it would be necessary to organise an independent schools’ musical festival.” The board agreed to send a delegate to a meeting to be held next Monday to consider proposals to organise such a festival. In view of the great success which attended the schools’ concerts given during “Music Week” in Wellington last year, it had been felt by many participants that it would be a great pity if some such effort were not made in 1931, said Mr. Tayler. The Wellington Headmasters’ Association and the principals of many secondary, private and denominational schools had signified their willingness to support such an effort, and it was hoped the idea would be favourably received by the board. As regarded the share to be taken by the primary schools, it would be similar to that undertaken last year, that is the formation of a combined choir of about 600 voices to sing at-an evening concert to be given in the Town Hall, with possibly a repeat concert. Rehearsals would be taken after school hours, different sections of the choir being trained by Mr. Ernest Jenner, of the Training College, and himself. A preliminary meeting to discuss the scheme will be held next Monday at Wellington East Girls’ College, to which the Board was invited to send a repreMr. A. W. Hutchins was deputed to attend the meeting.
