NOT THIS SEASON
Cook Strait Swim WATER TOO COLD Miss Gleitze’s Decision Although keen to make the attempt, Miss Mercedes Gleitze, the well-known long-distance swimmer, decided last evening that she would not set out this season on the proposed Cook Strait swim. Miss Gleitze came to her decision after a final consultation with Mr. John Tait, of Island Bay, with respect to the attempt. It is likely now that Miss Gleitze will return at the beginning of 1933, whan the season may be more favourable to the venture.
Mr. Tait has been studying conditions in Cook Strait as far as they are likely to affect the swim and he advised Miss Gleitze to abandon the attempt at present. Water temperature yesterday was 58 degrees, which was too cold for a prolonged swim, and it is unlikely that temperatures in the near future will be any warmer. It was on this ground mainly that Mr. Tait was against the attempt Added to this, there has been a heavy swell in the strait during the last few days, which, if continued, would make much harder work for the swimmer.
Miss Gleitze was very anxious to make the attempt to-day if she possibly could, but realised after speaking with Mr. Tait that it would be a foolish enterprise.
