FERRY BOATS’ TRIPS

It is the policy of ths council, in the ' interests of economy, to conserve the Muritai’s running in the ferry service by utilising the Cobar as far as possible. The Muritai is an oil-burning boat, and the Cobar a coal-burning one. The following figures supplied to the Eastbourne Borough Council concerning the two boats are interesting:— The Muritai made 46 round trips during February and the Cobar 132; the Muritai steamed 690 miles and the Cobar 1980 miles; the Muritai consumed 0.53 tons of oil each round trip, and the Cobar 0.42 tons of coal. For the month the Muritai used 24.5 tong of oil and the Cobar 56 tons of coal, While, however, the Cobar made nearly three times as many trips as the Muritai during February, it only carried 14,902 passengers, compared with the 25,644 carried by the Muritai.
