CRUISE OF DANA
Commemorative Medals NEW ZEALAND RECIPIENTS Medals struck in commemoration of the world cruise of the Danish steamer Dana, which visited New Zealand in the summer of 1928-29, have been forwarded to the Danish Consulate, Wellington, for distribution to persons who helped the expedition while it was in New Zealand waters. „ , , r The Acting-Consul for Denmark, Mr. A. J. Fountain, has accordingly sent Dana medals to the following:— Wellington: Mrs. S. A. Longuet, Hon. J. B. Donald, Postmaster-General; Messrs. A. E. Hefford, Chief Inspector of Fisheries; D. Ardell, Internal Affairs Department; Johannes C. Andersen. Turnbufl Library; W. Benedixsen; G. A. Troup, Mayor; New. Zealand InstitUAuckland; The'City of Auckland, the Auckland Museum. Palmerston North: Mrs. C. E. Dahl. Messrs. J. F. Clausen, Peter Hansen, A. C. Shioler. While on the eruise the staff of scientists aboard the Dana made an intensive study of the life in the ocean as well as of the physical and chemical character of seawater in different parts of the world. The expedition was under the direction of Professor Johannes Schmidt, director of Carlsburg Institute, Copenhagen, an eminent authority on fishery science who proposes to publish a report on the biology and hydrography ot the New Zealand region. Professor Schmidt would be glad to receive authentic specimens, with, proper identification, of large eels taken in New Zealand waters. The Chief Inspector of Fisheries will be pleased to get the heads (which can be preserved in salt), from which it is possible to identify the species, of any eels of outstanding size which may be taken.
