DANGER IN HIGH SIGNS

City Council Discussion PROPOSAL HELD UP The future erection of high signs Is likely to be discouraged by the City Council. A proposal put forward at last evening’s meeting to sanction a new 14ft. sign on a four-story building in Courtenay Place stirred the Mayor to make an objection to the practice. “We have to remember,” said Mr. Troup, “that Wellington is In the centre of an earthquake area, which should make us very careful indeed. The Government is about to issue by-laws respecting such matters, indicating that local bodies have not been as careful as they might have been in the past. We have to put our house in order. All signs on the tops of buildings and other excrescences on buildings should be examined in view of the dangers of earthquake. It is a paltry advertisement only and we should not consider it for a moment. The engineer states that he reported against it, so the council could not proceed in the face of its responsible officer. I move that the application be declined.” On the request of several councillors, the motion was altered to one that the clause be referred back to the by-laws committee. '
