COUNCIL BUSINESS

Meeting at Eastbourne A meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held last night, the DeputyMayor, Mr. S. F. Fisher, presiding. Considerable general business was done. Members of the Eastbourne Rugby Football Club were granted the same privileges and concessions on boats and buses as last year. A letter was received from the Wellington Automobile Club urging the council to make. its traffic by-laws uniform with the motor regulations. It was decided to inform the club that no alteration was necessary so far as Eastbourne was concerned, the speed limit through the main street being twenty-five miles an hour. The council decided to make a strong protest against any suggestion by the Wellington City Council to shift the starting places of the Eastbourne buses from the Wellington Public Library corner. During February 40,540 passengers were carried on the ferry boats, compared with 59,384 in February, 1930. From April 1, 1030, to February 28, 1931, 307,589 passengers were carried on the boats, compared with 401,723 passengers for the Corresponding period the previous year. Receipts from the boats for last February amounted to £1035/6/2, compared with £1771/4/10 for February, 1930. For the same periods expenditure was respectively £B5O/8/2 and £lOOl/(5/5. From April 1, 1930, to February 28, 1931, the receipts amounted to £11,079/17/3, compared with £12,954/5/7 for the corresponding period of last year. The expenditure for the same periods was £16,646/4/5 and £18,729 15/11 respectively. During February, £ll5l/7/6 was received from the buses, compared with £1335/17/7 in February, 1930. For the same periods the expenditure was £924 4/3 and £B5B/1/4, respectively. From April 1, 1930, to February 28, 1931, the receipts were £12,681/1/10, compared with £12,484/17/11 for the corresponding period of last year. Expenditure for the same periods was £10,225/1/4 and £13,721/3/6 respectively. Receipts in the district fund account from April 1, 1930, to February 28, 1931, amounted to £12,525/1/1, compared with £12,729/13/3 for the corresponding period last year. Expenditure for the same periods amounted to £7718/9/9 and £7203 16/4 respectively. Rates levied by the council for the present financial year amounted to • £10,500. To February 28, £9251/18/11 were collected, leaving £1248/1/1 outstanding on that date.
