Sir Walter Oarncross, Speaker of the Legislative Council, on his reappointment for a further term as a member of the Council. , , , Subsequently their Excellencies attended the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting at Trentham.
Mr. and Mrs. St. Lawrence, of Masterton, are staying at the Hotel St. George.
Mr. and Mrs. T. Sommerville, of Dunedin, and Mr. and Mrs. Handley Brown, New Plymouth, are at the Grand Hotel.
Mr. H. C. D. van Asch, of Christchurch, has been elected president for the ensuing year of the Canterbury Law Society.
Mr. W. P. Endean, M.P. for Parnell, was granted leave of absence for six days in the House of Representatives last' evening on account of family bereavement.
The Rev. H. J. Odell, Methodist minister at Te Aroha, who is to be transferred to Wellington for health reasons, will take up his duties in the Thorndon district.
Mr. L. R. Partridge, a member of the executive of the Wellington Manufacturers’ Association, will leave by the Monowai next Tuesday on a trip to Great Britain and Europe.
Mr. Edwin Dennis will sing the tenor music in the coming performance of “The Messiah” for the benefit of the Mayor s earthquake fund by the Royal Wellington Choral Union. The other soloists have already been announced. Mr. Frank G. Murdoch, partner of Gibbs, Bright and Company, Sydney, and local director of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, Ltd., arrived in Wellington yesterday morning by the Ulimaroa, and will leave for London by the Port Alma on Saturday next.

The Ven. Archdeacon J. D. Bussell and Miss Russell, of Waikato, who have been spending a holiday in the North of England, arrived in Wellington yesterday by the Ulimaroa from Sydney. While in England Archdeacon Russell met the Rev. H. G. Rosher, vicar of Lytham, formerly vicar of Palmerston North, and also visited the Rev. H. S. Blackburn, of Sandgate, Kent, another former vicar of Palmerston North.

Wrigley, Sydney; and Colonel H. C. Hall, London, are at the Hotel St. George. Mr. Clutba Mackenzie, director of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, left Auckland last week for New York, where he will represent New Zealand at a world conference on work for the blind. The conference, which will be the first of its kind since the international conference at London in 1914, has been organised by the American Foundation for the Blind, and representatives from 35 countries have accepted the invitations issued by President Hoover.
Mr. A. I D. Miller, who recently completed 40 years’ service in the Railway Department, retired on superannuation on Saturday last. Mr. Miller joined the service in the locomotive engineer’s ofliee at Christchurch in 1891, and after several years in various positions in the locomotive branch was transferred to the general manager’s office. Subsequently he saw service in the chief accountant’s office and in the maintenance branch, and had been for the past 14 years in the district engineer’s office at. Thorndon. He was fa rewelled‘on Saturday by his brother officers and presented with a, case of pipes and an easy diair. The presentation was made by Mr. W. 11. B. Bagge, District Engineer.
