MOUNT COOK PRISON

Clearing Massive Brick-work The huge base on the north side of the Alount Cook site which was to have formed part of the second wing of the prison as originally planned- has almost disappeared. In this portion alone there were enough bricks to build three or four houses. The walls of the main block are now being undermined on each side, and when this work is sufficiently far advanced steps will be taken to make the walls collapse toward the vacant ground on the western side. All these bricks were made by prison labour from the clay on the site, and many of them have the broad arrow stamped on the ends. Further excavations are being made at the front of the site for the museum and art gallery, and the clay is being sent to the brickyards.
