DANNEVIRKE RESULTS Rory Mor Wins Hartgill SPRINT TO BLUE PAPER Dominion Special Service. Dannevirke, March 1— The Dannevirke Racing Club was favoured with perfect weather for the concluding day of its autumn, meeting. There was a good attendance, and the course was in excellent order. The totalisator handled £5399/10/-, compared with £13,977 on the corresponding day last year. The total investments for the meeting ■ amounted to £10,934, against £28,058 in 1930, a decrease of £18,024. • , „ Notwithstanding that Mountain Heath looked almost a good thing for the Highweight Handicap, Tunbridge was the favourite. Mountain Heath trailed Cook to the straight, there coming through on the rails to stall off a challenge by Blacksmith, and -Win by half a length. Cook was n fair third, and Tunbridge and Lucretia were next. Bracket First and Second. Flute, with Roy Reed up, won die Maiden in a good finish with Acrospire, with whom she was bracketed. Nimble was ridden, in behind the leaders, but again the distance troubled her. The bracket paid a good dividend. Lady Ronald was fourth, and Master of Arts fifth. Acrosplre’s rider lost his irons. Beaten by Hord Track. Mount Shannon, favourite for the Hartgill Handicap, could not hit out on the hard course, and was never a possibility. Queen’s Choice and Fltzquex led to the straight, where Rory Mor went round on the outside, and eventually won well by a length and a half from Queen’s Choice, who beat Fltzquex by a head. Billion, Mount Shannon, and Bennanee followed. Won Narrowly. Baskier, always well placed, won the Tapuata Hack Handicap narrowly from Golden Shadow, with False Scent close up third, and Queen’s Salute going well in fourth place at the finish. White Doe was fifth. . ' Hot Favourite Falls. ) The hot favourite, Bramibletorn, was beaten a head in the Totatanul Handicap by Laconic, who with Swiftray led into the straight from Brambletorn, who made a futile effort to overhaul him. Jenny Diver was three lengths away third, then Klug Hal and Swiftray. Flower caused a boll-over when he beat. Chief Cook ,by half a length in the Juvenile Handicap. He led to the straight, Chief Cook failing to overhaul him. Red Rufus was three lengths away, and Chief Line was fourth. Cautious was badly left. Fight for Second. After getting away badly. Blue Paper, finishing strongly, won the Glenavay Handicap by a length. In a great contest for second place, Arajean got through on the rails to beat the pacemaker, Portray, by a head. Cuticle and Golden Shadow followed. Mahorn’s Double. Mahora easily won the Tlratu Handicap by three lengths from Peep, who was half a length ahead of Leyland. Then came Greymlst and Thrasher. STRONG TEAM Aucklanders for Trentham CHIEF JEWEL LEFT OUT Dominion Special Service. Auckland, March 12. Chief Jewel was left out of Jamieson’s team for Trentham. Nine horses have gone South from Takanini, and they make up a team that is sure to get some stake money. Bronze Eagle and High Comedy are both brilliant youngsters, and all the others are capable in their various classes. Puriri Park has done well since his double success at To Aroha, and he is expected to hold his own with the hacks at Paeroa. Speedmint has galloped well during the week, and she looks a bright prospect in two-year-old races at Paeroa. Mr. W. Taylor has glveu up his.. lease of Hampton Park, and the Dargaville winner has joined J. Chisholm’s team. Eager Rose looks better for recent racing, and it is expected that she will during the rest of the autumn show her best form.

Dark Prince was tried over the steeplechase fences at Ellerslie yesterday, when he shaped in a promising manner,. He is to make his debut over country at Paeroa on Saturday. Mr. D. Potter has just taken over a gelding by Adjutant from Capable, the dam of Maori Boy. His other youngster, by Kllbroney from Towal has been placed on the easy list. A. Morrow intends to school Beau Cavalier as soon as rain falls to ease the track. The steeplechaser has a very doubtfullooking foreleg. Respirator gave a very good display over hurdles yesterday, and it is probable that he will soon win a hack hurdle race. MANAWATU MEETING Handicaps for First Day By Telegraph—l’ress Association. Palmerston North, March 12. Handicaps for the first day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting have been declared as follow:— KAIERE HURDLES HANDICAP, of 175

TRENTHAM GALLOPS Tracks in Good Order LADY PAM VERY WELL (By "The Watcher.”) Trentham tracks were in good order for galloping yesterday morning. Tuesday night’s rain did a lot of good, and the grass tracks were even a trifle soft on top, but times generally were fast. The outside of the trial grass was mostly used, but Karapotl went on the outside of the course proper, while the two-year-olds as usual wore provided with the straight half on the course proper. It is not properly daylight now till 5;45 a.m., but the teams of H. Telford and J. W. Lowe, as usual, galloped in the dispersing darkness. Tea Queen’s task was an easy six furlongs. She should race well. Hunting Call broke away at the seven furlongs instead of sprinting four with Normandy, and he was allowed to run along. Ho took Imin. 34sec., and could have done much better. As in January, Hunting Call has done all his work in a very satisfactory manner, and he looks one of Trantham’s best prospects. Ephialtcs, who appreciates easy ground, ran four in 49sec., and did it well. Malayan, under restraint, took imin. 40sec. for a mile, the first half in 53sec. Pat’s Boy led Hymgreat at the end of seven in Imin. 33sec. Both went well. Lady Pam at Her Best. Lady Pam ran a mile in Imin. 46scc., being accompanied over the first five bySpear Lad, and being brought home by Fairwind. She did her work well, coming home over the last three in SSsec. It would be Impossible to have her in any better condition for her St. Leger engagement. ' Movietone and Trader Horn ran four in 50sec„ both hitting out well. Movietone has improved into a good-looking sort. Historic and Zephyrus, although begining at the mile post, did not begin galloping until reaching the six furlongs. They then ran the first two in 25 2-ssec., and the full journey in Imin. ISscc., both going well. The easy ground has improved the prospects of Historic. Zephyrus is almost certain to start in the St. Leger. Joi de Vai was given a good mile gallop without being extended, but she was doing about her best over the last couple of furlongs, and finished well. Pewa and Pakitere again went fast in the early stages of their mile gallop, running the first half in 50 3-ssec., and the first five in Imin. 4 l-osec. They were stopping at the finish, Pewa being ahead in Imin. 45sec. for tho full journey. Karapotl’s Gallop. Karapotl ran six furlongs freely on the outside of the course proper, where timing is impossible. Tobaccolaiid came away from Rothen at the end of six, with Wee Lackie right back, in Imin. 18sec., the last half in 51 4-ssec. Tobaccoland does not work with the same dash as he showed In the spring. Arikinui drew away from Toxeuma at the end of six, but he was kicked right out under a lightweight, while Toxeuma was not bustled. The time registered by Arikinui was Imin. 17 l-ssec„ the last half in 51 l-ssec. Havering worked twice round on the plough, coming home the. last time at a solid pace. It will take some of his condition off him; Rosshire and High Comedy were not galloped fast, while Habit, fresh in’after physic, was let of w-lth an easy task, t Two-year-olds at Work. The two-year-olds on the course proper galloped as follows:— Foghorn and Thermopylae in front of Acis and Prefect. Oratorian and Curie finished clear of Lavington, Salt Spray, and Waratah, with White Squall further back. Timing is misleading on this track, as they may be behind or in front of Pbe barrier posts, but Oratorian and Curie bath shaped very well. Laughing Prince and Cadland. Laughing Prince, Cadland, High Falutin and View Halloa worked after breakfast, not being asked to go fast. Fair Weather, Hot Tea, Lord Argosy, Silver Salvor, Bronze Eagle, and Dulen did similar work. Paganelli did a round on the grass, coming home the last three in 41sec. Aspian, after warming up, sprinted four on the course proper with Gay Court. Aspian went exceptionally well, and while he was better than Gay Court, the latter shaped well and looks much improved. Both carried big weights, and under the conditions Aspian's gallop compared more than favourably with earlier one? of merit. The Sun finished ahead of Money Mint over a mile in imin. 46jsec.

| NOTES AND COMMENTS i - (By “The Watcher.”) Xou>luaUoiis lor the FcUdiug , Jockey Ohrb’n Easter meeting on April 4 and 6 will close to-night at 9 o’clock. 8. G. Ware has arrived at Trentham with J Fair Weather and Hot Tea. L. G. Morris has brought four horses to - the Wellington, meeting—Laughing Prince, Cadland, High Faintin’, and View Halloa. ; They all look well. i The South Canterbury trainer, P. T. ' Hogan, has brought Dulen to Trentham. His two-vear-old is not engaged at the meeting, but Is on his way to Auckland, where he claims engagements at Easter. It IB probable that Dulen will be taken over , by M. J. Carroll for the purposes of the ; Northern trip. i R. W. King has Aberfeldy and the two- . year-old Ally, Idolise, engaged at the Weli itngton meeting, but he Is undecided about > the trip, and they wore scratched yesterday for their first day’s engagements. i Bright Glow was scratched for the i Thompson Handicap at 11.5 a.m. yesterday. ! Arlkira has been withdrawn from the i St. Leges .Stakes. I Paganelll Was ridden in his work >at ! Trentham yesterday by L. G. Morris. Morris has a remarkable record in connection with the Lord Quex gelding. He has ridden him seven, times in races, and has won-six of them, running second on the other occasion. Paganelli is to start in the Thompson Handicap, in which he will be ridden by T. Green. Karapoti galloped well over six furlongs on the outside of the course proper yes- ■ terday morning. The crack three-year-old looks' in first-class order for his race in the North Island Challenge Stakes. He ran a very fast five at Te Awamutu before leaving. I The ex-North Island jockey, N. Trillo, i who was in Southland for some time, is I now at Washdyke. ! Jason’s Quest will not be brought to i Trentham to fulfil engagements at ■ the j forthcoming meeting. ,i D. O'Connor will ride Limerick In his j Wellington engagements. i Asplan Sore. I Aspian, the Thespian two-year-old, who j nearly. brought off a surprise last January at Trentham, when Ammon Ra just got up to beat him in the' Wellington Stakes, is again at headquarters in charge of his trainer, H. L. Russell. Aspian claims an engagement in the North Island Challenge Stakes, in which he has escaped a penalty. His form gives him a good chance of J success, but. unfortunately he has been showing signs of lameness. Yesterday morning he was lame before work, but as t Ms, trainer has had the same trouble with "him more or less since he was put into training,. It does not look very serious, Mid Aspian galloped particularly well over half a mile. Still, .the trouble possibly prevents him from reaching the very peak ■ of condition, though on appearances he looks in first-rate order. Havering. Havering sweated freely after a couple of strong rounds on the plough at Trentham yesterday, and though he looks very well his condition may be a bit short for his race on Saturday. He is in both the Thompson' and Railway Handicaps, ,and though H. Gray stated at Bulls that he would probably run in the Thompson, J. Gray, when questioned yesterday, said that it had not been decided which engagement he would keep, 1 1 Bronze Eagle Lame. Havering was accompanied to Trentham by the two-year-old colt Bronze Eagle. This colt is a handsome youngster, who enjoys I " a great reputation for speed among the • track watchers at Takanini. He has raced i once, running unplaced in the Nursery J . Handicap, won. by Hunt the Slipper, at { Ellerslie, on Boxing Day. Bronze Eaglei was showing signs of lameness after workJ Ing yesterday morning, and .it became ? rather pronounced when he got on to thd ’ hard road. There was a little heat in the / off foreleg joint, and he probably gave ‘ himself a knock. The trouble may not be i serious, but it is disconcerting at this i stage. Bronze Eagle is by Brazen, a young » English sire by Phalaris, foaled in 1923, | and imported to N.S.W. in 1927. Brazen -, was a good two-year-old in England, and J at three years injured a fetlock-in his-first •, race, and retired/ Bronze Eagle's dam, « Torl’reda, is a sister to Hymestra, by Hy- ! mettus—Straga, by Birkenhead. Hyades, j dam of Prodice, Phaola, and Ammon Ra, t is a sister to Torfrida, so Bronze Eagle, ' it will be seen, has a-stout and .brilliant ! pedigree to back up his good, looks. He | was bred by the owner of Brazen. Mr. H. S C. Rouse, and was secured for 320gns. at j the Sydney yearling sales. ? - • L. G. Morris for. Lady Quex. i Lady Quex will be ridden in the North Island Challenge Stakes ..by L. G. Morris. She meets .Karapoti 21b. better than when he beat her in the Jackson Stakes by three-quarters of a length over six furlongs. On that occasion she had just recovered from her New Plymouth injury, X' so she is bound to be a better mare on Saturday. In, the Jackson Stakes also, she got the best of the jump-away, and was forced into the position of early pacemaker, . which does not suit her so well as coming from behind. Lady Quex' arrived at Trentham last evening in charge of V E. George. I Not Coming. k Adelphi and The Quorn were acceptors 1 for the Wellington meeting, but T. Lloyd f has cancelled the trip. Adelphi did not f race up to expectations at Motukarara, t" while The Quorn has been on the easy list ’ for a few days. I Lord Argosy. t ' Mr. J. M. Samson’s Irish-bred tliree- ‘ year-old, Lord Argosy, has reached Tren-' S' tham from Washdyke in charge of F. 1 Trilfprd, accompanied by Silver Salver. Lord Argosy, being bred North of the : Line, is entitled to a 71b. allowance in the ■ North Island Challenge Stakes, which brings his weight down to 7.13. UnfortunI ately he may be unable to keep his engagement, as he is very sore as the result of knocking himself about on the trip, i He gave a lot of trouble when being loaded : on the steamer at Lyttelton, and has , knocked his near stifle about, and was very ) Stiff and sore ou being unloaded. He is , .improving, and working it off, but. the | happening is not likely to assist in his f preparation. I! Leave it to the Judge. * f Jumping to conclusions and expressing J opinions about a close finish unless in ; direct line witli the judge betrays a lack j of knowledge. In a close finish it is imj. possible for anyone outside the judge’s j bos to give an acceptable opinion, parti--1 cularly when horses cross the line wide J apart from each other. The wireless is I said to have sent out Waterline as the winner of the Newmarket Handicap instead of Parkwood. Pink Coat. Pink Coat has been in light work at Washdyke, but it is very unlikely that the attempt to put him through a preparation will be persevered with. The prospects of getting Pink Coat to the post , again- were not bright, but he was such a ■ /high-class galloper that the effort was •- worth making. j Australian Cup Winner. ; Carry On, the winner of the Australian • Cup,-,is a three-year-old filly, trained by ; the ex-New Zealanfler, George Price. Her early Corm was moderate, but a week before her recent, success, she ran third to Voilraond and Balloon King in the St. Jxigcr, and apparently she liad satisfied her connections with her staying pros- . pects. She is by Magpie, a Dark Ronald horse, who has been a great au-ccess as a sire. Her dam, Farfadet, an imported mare who did no racing, is by Hurry On from Woodsprite, by Stornoway (son of Desmond) from Wood Dais-y, by Cylene. Masterton Dates. The Masterton Racing Club has changed the dates of its autumn meeting from April 10 and H to May 22 and 23. Mr. A. McDonald has presented a gold cup, value IDOgns., to go to the owner of the winner of the Masterton Cup. A miniature of the gold cup will go to the winning jockey, I though why the jockey and not the trainer L should ije the recepient Is not quite clear.
