BALCLUTHA BRIDGE
Cost to Exceed £50,000 DETERMINING LIABILITY Steps are to be taken by the Main Highways Board to finalise a proposal to erect a new traffic bridge at Balclutha. “For some considerable time jthe question of erecting a new traffic bridge at Balclutha has been under construction,’ states the board in a statement to the Press. “’The cost of the bridge is estimated at between £50.000 and £60,000, and the Main Highways Board agreed with the local bodies concerned that it would provide a free grant of £25,000, a subsidy of £2 for £1 on further expenditure up to £lO,OOO, and £3 for £1 on expenditure in excess of these amounts. “The three local authorities interested in the bridge are the Bruce and Clutha Counties. and the Balclutha Borough. In the past these local authorities have shared expenses of the bridge on an euual basis, but they are unable to come to a similar agreement in respect of (he cost of the new bridge. Bruce and Clutha Counties are prepared -to each pay one-third of the amount to be provided by the local authorities for the new bridge, but the Balclutha Borough Council is not prepared to agree to provide the other third. The board has. therefore, decided to have plans for the pew bridge prepared, and on completion 'of these nlans the board will make a formal citation on the local authorities with a view to .setting up a commission under the Punblie Works Act to decide the relative liability of each.
