Protest at Rent Increase By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, March 5. Heavy increases in the rentals of houses leased to railway servants by the Railway Department have been brought under the notice of Mr. A. E. Ansell, member of Parliament for Chalmers. The increases in some cases amount to as much as 300 per cent. Instances of the increases, which came into force on February 1, are as follow, the new rental being given in parentheses:—7/6 (22/6), 15/- (33/9), 15/- (44/6), .8/6 (24/6), 6/6 (19/-;, 9/8 (28/8), 10/6 (24/6). . Mr. Ansell communicated with the Minister on the subject and received a reply stating that the increases were imposed as a result of the Royal Commission’s recommendations and after very close investigation. It was not considered the men were being harshly dealt "’jlr. Ansell intends to voice a protest in the House.
