FARMERS IN NEED

Important Conference at Canberra THEODORE’S SCHEME By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Rec. February 4, 10 p.m.) Sydney, February 4. An important conference is proceeding at Canberra on finance, unemployment, and help for farmers between the Prime Minister, Mr. J. H. Scullin, the Federal Treasurer, Mr. E. G. 'Theodore, and the chairman of the Commonwealth Bank, Sir Robert Gibson. A series of financial proposals evolved by Mr. Theodore will be placed before Sir Robert Gibson, who will be asked how far the Commonwealth Bank will be able to assist the Government’s revised plans for coping with unemployment, and affording relief to wheat growers. » The outcome of the conference is awaited In all parts of the Commonwealth. So desperate is the plight of hundreds of farmers in the wheat and irrigation areas of the western and southern portions of New South Wales that they have pledged themselves to resist any attempt to foreclosure and -to refrain from bidding for one another’s properties. The Producers’ Advisory Council has issued a statement advocating a rura» emergency loan to assist the Australian farmer. The council suggests a loan of £3,000,000 or £4,000,000, raised in instalments, to allow urgent cases to be dealt with immediately, with a sales tax on flour. This amount would meet the farmers’ needs.
