RANGER KILLED
Thrown from Horse
MOUNT WANDERS TO HOUSE
Dominion Special Service.
New Plymouth, January 27. A riderless horse with both stirrups on one side of the saddle wandered to the residence of Mr. E. H. Gibson, at Okato, at 5 p.m. to-day, to announce silently that an accident had overtaken the rider, Frederick Williams, aged 69, Egmont county ranger, who was found dead. Mr. Gibson, who recognised the horse, mounted, and the animal directed him to a deep water table near the Leith Road junction with the main highway. Mr. Williams was found lying on his back with his neck broken. It is understood from statements made to the police that Mr. Williams was engaged to drive a bull and cow along the road. The cotv broke off up Leith Road, and when Mr. Williams succeeded in heading it off the bull ran off in the opposite direction. While he was giving chase the horse stopped suddenly with its front feet stiff, and Mr. Williams was thrown on his head.
