ASSASSIN TO DIE
Killed Police Inspector ATTEMPT ON GOVERNOR Delhi, January 26. Hari Kishen, a young Punjabi, was sentenced to death nt Lahore for the murder of Chanan Singh, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police, and sentenced to life transportation for an attempt to murder the Governor of the Punjab and Budsingh Wadawari, a detective, in the Punjab University Hall. The jury found the prisoner guilty on all three charges, but its recommendation of mercy on account of his youth was not accepted by the Judge.
An attempt to assassinate Sir Geoffrey de Montmorency, Governor of the Punjab, was made on December 23. Two bullets struck the Governor, one on the arm, and the other in the left hip. Of six shots fired another hit and fatally wounded a sub-inspector of police, named Channan Singh. The fourth wounded another member of the police, and the fifth a woman.
DISTURBED CALCUTTA Mobs Charged by Police UNRULY MAYOR ARRESTED Delhi, January 26. The Congress celebration of Independence Day led to an attempt to hold a mass meeting at Calcutta. Four processions headed by Congress flags were dispersed by the police after baton charges. A number of those in the procession were injured. Subhas Bose, Mayor of Calcutta, who was released from gaol last Saturday, has been arrested for attempting to address a meeting.
Nearly a hundred arrests have been made, Including eighty women;
