MORE OPTIMISM
Campaign Planned
SUPPORT FOR SCHEME Businessmen’s Move Support to a scheme for a Campaign of Optimism was accorded by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce at its meeting last evening. Mr, J. Abel, chairman of the publicity committee of the Manufacturers’ Association, wrote stating that he had brought the question of a campaign of optimism before his committee. The suggestion had been enthusiastically supported and the Manufacturers’ Association was prepared to sponsor the scheme. Financial support also had been offered. 'lt was desired to get the support of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Employers’ Association and Manufacturers’ Association officially to sponsor the scheme. The writer’s idea was to appoint an organiser whose principal business would be to canvass for donations from every section of the business community. The suggested publicity would be entirely free from the boosting of any section of industry such as New Zealand-made goods, but would be on broad national lines. It would be advisable to use hoardings, tramcars, screens and newspapers. “Although we are going through very troublous times, we need not do so with handkerchiefs to our eyes,” said the chairman, Mr. D. J. McGowan. “If we can encourage the public to spend a little more it is going to benefit trade and relieve unemployment. I think the chamber would be quite in order in giving its moral support in any case to a move of this nature.” Miniature specimens of proposed posters were displayed to the meeting.
